When you are deciding on a gas or charcoal barbecue you will need to think about several factors including how easy it is to light, your budget plus a number of other factors. Whichever type you pick you will get just the same tasty results! Here you will find a guide so that you can make a wise decision.

Charcoal Barbecue Grills

Charcoal barbecues are the simplest and cheapest of the barbecue grills as they are simply a fireproof metal bow, and a food rack and frequently air control vents. They may be made from stainless steel or cast iron. The easiest to look after are barbecues constructed from stainless steel that have a coating of baked enamel as this guards against corrosion. Make sure the wheels are heavy duty so that they will not crack if you leave the barbecue out during very hot or cold spells. It is preferable to have a cooking grate constructed from stainless steel or nickel plate so that it will not rust and you will find it easy to clean. Also check that the handles are wooden as metal handles will get too hot. Also try to find one with a hinged grate as this will make it easier to add more charcoal. A number of models have an attached work surface but ensure that it is easy to keep clean and will be durable.

Advantages and Disadvantages

Charcoal grills are typically much cheaper than natural gas or propane grills and are often preferred for their familiar ambiance. They are not as easy to light as gas grills but many people think this adds to the enjoyment! Cleaning them out can be messy and they are be more expensive to run. In spite of this if you only intend to use it infrequently this won’t really make much difference.

Gas Barbecue Grills

Gas barbecues can run on either propane or natural gas. Stainless steel construction with an enamel finish is undoubtedly the best as it will not be prone to rusting if the grill is left outside. Make sure it has sturdy, welded legs so they last a long time. It is a good idea to select a grill that has at least two burners which are evenly spaced. Two different types of systems are used, lava rocks or angled bars. We like better cooking bars which allows vaporisation of the cooking juices and gives the food a smoky flavor. Using lava rocks may cause pooling of the cooking juices which could cause a flare up.

Advantages & Disadvantages

Gas grills are not as cheap as charcoal barbecue grills however a lot of people like them for their convenience. It is much easier to control the temperature and they are easy to light. Gas barbecues are less expensive to operate than charcoal barbecues so if you intend to use your barbecue a lot they may work out cheaper. They are simple to keep clean and there are no ashes to remove!
